These Freelander IRD / Transfer Box Planetary Shims are no. 8 in the exploded diagram of the IRD opposite. These are for a Frelander 1 (1998 - 2006).. If you remove the prop shaft the VCU will be removed with it, so this can no longer give problems. If your IRD is already damaged then, without the pressure of the prop shaft you may seem.

Hi, the IRD takes a 75/90w oil, to specification API GL5 & takes approx 1.1 litres. There is a drain plug & filler/level plug. PLEASE DO NOT drain the old oil out UNTIL you have removed the filler/level plug as the plugs are made of very soft metal & round off very easily & if you drain the oil first then can't get the filler/level plug out you.

my freelander (1.8 1998) is due its mot and after much reading it appears to be the 'ird', it drives well without the propshaft, but does it have to have the propshaft on to pass its mot, if not can the ird be modified i.e broken gear removed that connects front to rear drive - therefore looks like 4x4 but only front wheel drive.

Yes - you can make the freelander into a front wheel drive vehicle. You will need to remove the IRD (essentially the center transfer case) and replace it with the same unit from a 2WD freelander. The VCU connects the front wheels to the rear wheels and acts like a clutch, allowing slippage between the prop shafts. If the VCU locks/seizes up transmission wind-up will occur, and in the Freelander's case this will destroy the Intermediate Reduction Drive (IRD).
